Meet André Favoto, a talented software engineer from Brazil who joined Telescope as a consultant, working on an exciting project at ESS (European Spallation Source).
Originally from Brazil, André highlights that while his home country is well-known for football and carnivals, what he truly loves about it is the warmth of its people, lively social gatherings, and, of course, the amazing food. Though he already misses Brazilian flavors, he’s making up for it by exploring Sweden’s food scene, especially its pastries. He has also embraced the Swedish tradition of fika, enjoying coffee breaks with colleagues and friends. Semla and cinnamon buns have quickly become some of his favorites!
André’s journey to Sweden has been an eventful one—not only for him but also for his two cats, who joined him after an extensive relocation process. His wife and mother-in-law accompanied them to make the journey easier, ensuring the cats arrived safe, sound, and even dressed in cozy hoodies to brave the Swedish winter!
André and his family have settled in Lund, a historic and charming city known for its stunning medieval architecture, which he finds both fascinating and aesthetically pleasing. He loves how quiet and bike-friendly the city is, making it easy to explore at a relaxed pace. While he has mostly focused on getting to know Lund, he has also made frequent trips to Malmö, which offers more entertainment options and a great beer pub scene. Adjusting to Sweden’s winter was a bit of a shock, as André arrived during the coldest months. However, he has adapted well and is looking forward to experiencing Sweden’s warm and bright spring and summer and traveling across the country.
At work, André is part of the control systems integration team at ESS, where he develops software for neutron instruments—a role that places him at the forefront of groundbreaking scientific research and technological development. Walking through ESS, he often finds himself in awe of the sheer scale and innovation of the facility, feeling a deep sense of pride in being part of such an ambitious research project.
One of the things he appreciates most about working in Sweden is the work-life balance, which allows him to spend more time with his family, pursue hobbies, and enjoy life outside of work. His professional goal is to specialize in systems and control engineering and potentially pursue postgraduate studies while gaining experience in Sweden’s cutting-edge research environment.
For anyone considering a move to Sweden, André’s advice is simple: embrace the experience with an open mind. He believes that stepping into a new culture and way of life is incredibly rewarding, and Sweden has been an excellent place to grow both personally and professionally.
Welcome to Sweden, André! Wishing you an exciting journey ahead!
