February 6th marks Sami National Day, a celebration of the Sami people, one of Sweden’s five official national minorities and one of the world’s few indigenous groups in Europe. This day is observed not only in Sweden but also across Norway, Finland, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula, where the Sami people have lived for thousands of years.
This date commemorates the first Sami national meeting, held in Trondheim, Norway, in 1917, where Sami representatives gathered to discuss common concerns, marking a significant step in their fight for cultural and political recognition.
🔹Who are the Sami?
The Sami people have a rich cultural heritage, their own languages, a distinct flag, and even a Sami Parliament (Sametinget) in Sweden that represents their interests. About 20,000 Sami live in Sweden today, many of whom continue to practice reindeer herding, a tradition deeply woven into Sami identity and history.
🔹Sweden’s Commitment to Inclusion
Sweden recognizes the Sami as an indigenous people, and their language and culture are protected by law. The country has taken steps to preserve Sami traditions, land rights, and self-governance, reflecting Sweden’s broader commitment to inclusion and minority rights.
❄️Fun Fact!
People often say that the Sami have more than 200 words for snow—but what they actually have are over 200 words describing the condition and quality of snow, a skill essential for surviving in Arctic climates.
🎥 Have you seen Frozen II? The movie’s Northuldra tribe in the Enchanted Forest is inspired by the Sami people! Disney even collaborated with Sami representatives to ensure respectful and accurate representation.
On this day, the Sami flag is raised, and celebrations include joik singing, cultural events, and traditional foods like souvas (smoked reindeer meat). It’s a day of pride, remembrance, and recognition of an enduring heritage.
Let’s celebrate the diversity that makes Sweden unique! Happy Sami National Day!
