St. Lucia Day: Celebrating Light, Hope, and Togetherness in Sweden
13-12-2024

December 13th marks St. Lucia Day, one of Sweden’s most beloved traditions. Rooted in both Christian and Scandinavian folklore, St. Lucia is a symbol of light and hope during the darkest time of the year. The name “Lucia” comes from the Latin word lux (light), and this day brings communities together to celebrate warmth and togetherness.

The highlight of the celebration is the Lucia procession, where a young girl representing Lucia wears a crown of candles and leads a group of singers dressed in white, all carrying candles and performing traditional songs like Sankta Lucia. These processions take place in schools, churches, and even outdoors in city squares or scenic natural settings, adding to the magical ambiance and spreading a message of harmony and hope.

And let’s not forget the festive treats! Swedes celebrate with lussekatter, soft saffron buns shaped like an “S” and often enjoyed with a warm cup of glögg or coffee.

As St. Lucia brings light to Sweden’s dark winter days, we at Telescope wish everyone a warm and bright St. Lucia Day! May this day inspire us all to bring light and kindness to the world around us.
